Describe some of the daily responsibilities and daily activities of an AB seaman?
An able-bodied seaman stands bridge watch, lookout, helmsman, and steers the ship. He can also run the ship's main launch.
What are some of the skills, physical abilities, and personal characteristics someone should have if considering becoming an AB seaman?
An AB seaman should be proficient in rigging and handling gear, plus already have the competencies of an ordinary seaman.
What kinds of high school courses would you recommend for someone considering this type of work?
Math is highly recommended, as well as taking courses in the physical sciences and physics. The AB seaman is responsible for calculating the load on cranes. Geography is also important
What additional training is require or available after high school?
AB Seaman is the 2nd level job of 6 towards becoming captain. By attending a 4-year maritime academy, the 1st two levels can be skipped.

Ordinary seaman, also called Mariner 1

3rd Mate. Three years as AB seaman, at sea, is required before becoming eligible to take the exam for 3rd Mate

What is the average starting salary for your job?
Starting base pay is $1,909. In addition to base pay, everyone on board also receives a 15% Sea Premium Pay while the ship is away from home port and 8 hours overtime at time-and-a-half for each Saturday, Sunday, and holiday while the ship is away from home.
